2002 Discovery Award Winners

Prestigious Discovery Awards presented at show

Once again, SGCDpro selected winners for its prestigious Discovery Awards during the 2002 DECO show. This year, despite the consolidation of categories, there were 320 entries in 15 design and 7 technical categories. In the design category, glass and ceramic entries were judged separately. All entries were displayed in SGCDpro's Discovery Room which was located in the exhibition hall. This new location was well received by members who felt having the exhibits and entries in one hall was a good idea. The winners were selected by three judges. The judging panel included Holly Carter, U.S. Glass/Glass.com, Arn Bernstein, ASI and Norb Buddenbohn, a past SGCDpro president. Two Discovery Award entries were honored for overall merit and received the Vandenoever and the Judges' Award.

Lenox China receives Vandenoever Award

Show-goers who visited the Discovery Room unanimously selected a "Best of Show" entry to receive the annual Vandenoever Award. This year's winner is Lenox China with its formal "Clinton Service" tableware. The four-piece setting is decorated with manual transfer and etches, raised paste, and hand applied precious metal.

Judges Award goes to Design Point Decal

After reviewing every entry in the Discovery Room, the three judges voted for their own "Best of Show" entry. Design Point Decal became the 2002 recipient of the Judges Award with its Yankee stadium, four-panel water-slide decal on porcelain.

2000 Discovery Award Winners

2000 Discovery Awards Winners For Outstanding Glass & Ceramic Decorating

SGCDpro honored Discovery Award winners during its annual show and technical seminar in San Diego, Sept. 10-13. The 2000 awards featured 223 entries in 30 design and 9 technical categories. Two awards were presented in each design category with glass and ceramic entries judged separately.


In addition to the design and technical awards, SGCDpro also honored two Discovery entries for overall merit. All entries were displayed in SGCDpro's Discovery Room, and a panel of three judges reviewed each category and selected winners by consensus. The judging panel included Kristi Grahl, Ceramic Industry; Dennis Newbury, Dennis Newbury & Co.; and Gary Stevens, Product Decorating Systems, Inc.


Judging was completed before the Discovery Room was opened to the general membership for review. SGCDpro member Robert Zollweg of Libbey Inc.; and Randall Van Hise of Engelhard Corp. organized the Discovery Room. Zollweg also presided over the award ceremony at SGCDpro's Annual Banquet. Zollweg, who has presided over the Discovery Awards for more than ten years, noted "once again the level of competition was outstanding with the final vote for Vandenoever honors hotly contested between several entries."


A total of 536 members and their associates attended the annual show and technical seminar in San Diego. The 2001 awards will be presented in Arlington, Virginia from Sept. 10 – Oct.3.

Vandenoever Award goes to Johnson Matthey

Every year, SGCDpro members select a "Best of Show" entry from among the best overall


Discovery Award entries in the Discovery Room. The 2000 recipient of the Vandenoever


Award is Johnson Matthey, Maastricht, Holland, for its "Van Gogh Vodka Bottle." The ware is partly etched and has 12 screened colors.

Preciosa wins Judges' Award


SGCDpro's 3-judge panel selected its own "Best of Show" recipient after reviewing every entry in the Discovery Room. The 2000 recipient is Preciosa, Inc., Westfield, NJ, for a black, gold luster deco bowl. The ware, which required precise masking, was fired at 1100° F.

Cosmetic Containers, Glass: Art Deco Division of Pochet of America; 50 ml. "White Violet bottle" decorated with organic spray with two-color tight registration.

Architectural Glass: Custom Deco, Inc.; Glass tiles acid etched with resist design and colored coatings.

Architectural Ceramic: Decoritalia; "La Citta Delle Carte." Large six-piece tile panel with transfer decoration reproduced for architect Piero Fornasetti.

Industrial Ceramic: Decoritalia; This decas step tile ensures a commercial grade (PE14) as well as a high friction coefficient level to answer all codes. For the printing of these decals, special materials are used to achieve the special aspects of the tile.

1999 Discovery Awards Winners For Outstanding Glass & Ceramic Decorating

The Society of Glass and Ceramic Decorators (SGCDpro) honored Discovery Award winners during its annual show and technical seminar in Pittsburgh, Sept. 26-29. The 1999 awards featured 418 entries in 17 design and 15 technical categories. Two awards were presented in each design category with glass and ceramic entries judged separately.


In addition to the design and technical awards, SGCDpro also honored two Discovery entries for overall merit. All entries were displayed in SGCDpro's Discovery Room, and winners were selected by a panel of judges who reviewed each category and selected winners by consensus. The judging panel included Patricia Janeway, Ceramic Bulletin; William "Jed" Janeri, Accugraphics; Susan Siska, Sprosen Designs; and Richard Wasowski, Ferro Corp.


Judging was completed before the Discovery Room was opened to the general membership for review. SGCDpro members Robert Zollweg of Libbey Inc.; Nancy Klinefelter, Baltimore Glassware; and Randy Van Hise, Lenox, organized the Discovery Room, with Zollweg presiding over the award ceremony at SGCDpro's Annual Banquet.


Zollweg, who has presided over the Discovery Awards for seven years, noted that the "caliber of entries was outstanding with the number of entries in the tableware categories growing dramatically."

The 1999 Discovery Award winners are:

Vandenoever Award: Every year, SGCDpro members who visit the Discovery Room vote to select a "Best of Show" entry to receive the annual Vandenoever Award. The 1999 recipient is Lenox Inc., Pomona, NJ, for its "Celebrating the Millennium in America" bowl and plate pattern that adopts design elements of all previous White House patterns by Lenox. The ware is decalled, lined with burnished gold, and includes raised hand-applied enamels. In addition, the ware is numbered with a foot-stamp inscription to certify it as a limited collector's edition.

Judges' Award Winner: SGCDpro's 4-judge panel selected its own "Best of Show" recipient after reviewing every entry in the Discovery Room. The 1999 recipient is Oneida, Ltd., Buffalo, NY, for a Millenium plate produced on Schönwald Porcelain. The ware was designed and manufactured by Schönwald in Germany, and Oneida markets the piece in North America. It is decorated with a high-fire decal that includes gold and platinum highlights. The piece is part of a collection of four Millenium plate patterns offered by Oneida.

Food Containers, Glass: Libbey Inc.; Vegetable carafes that feature five colors screen- printed in tight registration.


Food Containers, Ceramic: Heinrich Ceramic Decal; Set of 9 spice jars by The Franklin Mint that are decorative as single pieces -- although designed for display in a specific pattern on a custom spice rack. Features the art of Lowell Herrero with four- color-process decals by Heinrich.


Beverage Containers, Glass: Custom Deco South; Masterpiece bottle featuring a three-color decoration with multiple water-slide decals.


Cosmetic Containers, Glass: Art Deco Division of Pochet of America; 100 ml. Astrology – Libra bottles for Victoria's Secret. Bottles are sand-blasted, and printed with a tight registration for flux and palladium applications.


Architectural Ceramic: Johnson Matthey; Street Smarts "Manhattan Borough" pattern by Imagine Tile produced with decals by Johnson Matthey.


Tumblers, Glass: Libbey Inc.; White Magnolia design featuring a white halftone flower screen-printed using 3 colors and a raised clear-flux application.


Mugs, Ceramic: Custom Deco; Black mug with full wrap gold and platinum decoration.

Ad Specialty / Premium, Glass: Moderne Glass Co.; UPS logo on a patented Moderne Glass mug featuring a gold embossed decoration and a 22K gold band. Mug is given to UPS employees nationwide.

Ad Specialty/Premium, Ceramic: Glaswood Industries; 16 oz. Millennium mug featuring a "2000" mold on handle and decorated using four-color process, one bump color and a clear grit overlay.


Novelties & Souvenirs, Glass: Heinrich Ceramic Decal; Super Bowl XXXII tumbler for XPRES decorated with full-wrap double-sided "window" effect decal by Heinrich. Decal is four-color standard and reverse printed for a single-fire application.


Novelties & Souvenirs, Ceramic: Oneida, Ltd.; Millenium plate with decoration by Schönwald Porcelain. See description in Judges' Award listing.

Collectibles, Glass: Fenton Art Glass Co.; Mulberry glass Amphora designed by Martha Reynolds with decaled "Mystical Bird" decoration, glass enamel overlays and burnished gold enhancements. The decal is first applied and fired at 1,000° F; glass enamels are then hand-applied and refired; and finally the gold is applied and fired again to highlight stems.

Collectibles, Ceramic: Heinrich Ceramic Decal; TV-shaped music boxes by The Franklin Mint with scenes from famous television series. High-resolution four-color-process decals by Heinrich are enhanced with 11 boost colors, bright gold and bright platinum.


Artware, Glass: Reusche & Co. of T.W.S.; "Buried Heart" painted glass wall-decoration by Virginia Gabaldo featuring 16 Reusche enamels on slumped reverse-painted glass.

Lightingware, Glass: Fenton Art Glass: Burmese lamp shade from Fenton with decoration design by J.K. Robin Spindler on mold created in 1978. Features hand-painted hibiscus and decal scroll work with two-firing steps. Produced for Fenton's "Connoisseur Collection" and limited to 950 piece production.


Lightingware, Ceramic: Commercial Decal of Ohio; Lithophane lamp decorated by Schmidt Failing with decals by Commercial Decal. Image is embossed in translucent porcelain, and decal is applied and fired on the inside surface.


Innovation, Glass: Reusche & Co. of T.W.S.; "Moving Cat" by Rufus Seder Life Tiles. Image is direct printed on innovative hand-cast glass tile to give viewer the impression that the cat is jumping when seen from different angles. Color by Reusche & Co.


Casual Tableware, Glass: Custom Deco; Beverage Pilsner set decorated with an innovative acid etch process with a one-color sprayed base.

1998 Discovery Awards Winners For Outstanding Glass & Ceramic Decorating

The Society of Glass and Ceramic Decorators (SGCDpro) honored Discovery Award winners during its annual show and technical seminar in New Orleans, Sept. 13-16. The 1998 awards featured 378 entries in 16 design and 15 technical categories. Two awards were presented in design categories with glass and ceramic entries judged separately.


In addition to the design and technical awards, SGCDpro also honored two Discovery entries for overall merit. All entries were displayed, and winners were selected by a panel of judges who reviewed each category and selected winners by consensus. The panel of three judges included Chuck Neff, Cerdec; Dirck Schou, Catalina China; and Charles Smith, H.J. Amann.


Judging was completed before the Discovery Room was opened to the general membership for review. SGCDpro members Robert Zollweg of Libbey Inc.; Lee Marvin, AdGraphics; and Randy Van Hise, Lenox, organized the Discovery Room, with Zollweg presiding over the award ceremony at SGCDpro's Annual Banquet. Zollweg, who has presented the Discovery Awards for six years, noted that the "caliber of entries continues to be outstanding with the number of entries in tableware and artware categories increasing dramatically along with the number of entries representing innovative decorating techniques."

The 1998 Discovery Award winners are:

Vandenoever Award: Every year, SGCDpro members who visit the Discovery Room vote to select a "Best of Show" entry to receive the annual Vandenoever Award. The 1998 winner is The Pfaltzgraff Co. for its immensely popular Naturewood casual tableware set designed by Jodi Phy with heat-release decals by Johnson Matthey. Ware is decorated with satin onglaze heat-release decals on a satin glaze. Naturewood also received the Discovery Award in the casual tableware category, and a Naturewood accessory cookie canister received a Discovery Award in the ceramic food container category. According to HFN magazine, Naturewood ranks #3 in its list of top-selling casual tableware patterns, and the pattern ranks #1 in the list of most-selected casual tableware patterns for bridal registrations.


Judges' Award Winner: SGCDpro's 3-judge panel selects its own "Best of Show" recipient after reviewing every entry in the Discovery Room. The 1998 winner is Decoritalia S.P.A. for a formal tableware pattern for The Bradford Exchange, Europe that was designed by famous Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt. Bradford Europe developed the pattern from a series of collector plates using the artist's paintings as the subject. Decals were produced by Decoritalia using a combination of 23 colors including gold and metallics to reconstruct the pictorial effects of the originals. Ware was fired at 1500 F for 5 hours.

Discovery Awards for Excellence in Design:

Food Containers, Glass: Owens-Brockway Glass; 10 oz. jelly tumblers for Welch's with decorative Disney characters screen printed using 6 lead-free colors applied by Strutz decorating machines.


Food Containers, Ceramic: The Pfaltzgraff Company; Naturewood cookie canister designed by Jodi Phy for Pfaltzgraff. Features satin decals by Johnson Matthey fired on satin finish glaze.


Beverage Containers, Glass: Custom Deco; Cape Hatteras Growler featuring direct-printed pirate decoration using 3 colors.


Cosmetic Containers, Glass: The Allen Company; "Old Spice" bottle decorated with four colors blended in one screen. As a result, no two pieces are exactly the same.


Architectural Ceramic: Decoritalia S.P.A.; Tile mural decorated by Ceramica Bardelli for architect Piero Fornasetti. An on-glaze technique with decals by Decoritalia was used for this project to retain superb graphic definition. Fired at 1382 degrees F for 5 hours.


Appliances, Glass: Schott Glaswerke; "Fundamentals" Ceran cooktop panel featuring jeans-design printed with 7 colors.


Tumblers, Glass: Libbey Inc.; Frost & Gold Retro tumblers decorated with a 2-color screen process with satin etch and metallic gold.


Mugs, Glass: Elcyda Corp.; "Root Beer" tankard screen-printed using 6 colors design.


Mugs, Ceramic: Keram Druck; Mug decorated with water-slide decals featuring 7 colors, transparent relief and fast fired.

Ad Specialty / Premium, Glass: Commercial Decal of Ohio; Pete's Tarot Card pint glasses decorated by California Glass with decals by Commercial Decal of Ohio. Decals were printed using process colors plus five enhancement colors.

Lightingware, Ceramic: Commercial Decal of Ohio; Lilac lithophane lamp decorated by Schmidt Failing with decals by Commercial Decal. Image is embossed in translucent porcelain, and a nine-color decal is applied and fired on the inside surface.

Overlay ink is first applied for the sun's yellow and text, then orange is added around sun with half-tone effect. Mug is a "Spinner" featuring spinning globe bead at top of handle.

1997 Discovery Award Winners

SGCDpro 1997 Discovery Awards presented for outstanding glass and ceramic decorating

The Society of Glass and Ceramic Decorators (SGCDpro) honored Discovery Award winners during its annual show and technical seminar in San Diego, Sept. 28 - Oct. 1. The 1997 awards featured 391 entries in 16 design and 15 technical categories. Two awards were presented in design categories with glass and ceramic entries judged separately.


In addition to the design and technical awards, SGCDpro also honored two Discovery entries for overall merit. Discovery Room visitors elected the "Born to be Free" charger plate designed by Ted Blaylock for The Franklin Mint with decals by Heinrich Ceramic Decal to receive the annual Vandenoever Award for "best of show." The design features a collage of outdoor scenes and has a dramatic soaring eagle as its main focal point. The plate is decorated with high resolution four-color process decal technology and includes tightly registered brite gold.


Also, the judging panel presented the Judges' Award for overall effect to Cookson Matthey Ceramics for the Wedgwood "Persia" formal dinnerware pattern that is decorated with Cookson Matthey decals.


All entries were displayed, and winners were selected by a distinguished panel of judges who reviewed each entry category and selected winners by consensus. The panel of three judges included Rebecca Bushner, Annieglass; Paul Helgesen, Treasure Craft; and Mike Musselman, Screen Graphics.


Judging was completed before the Discovery Room was opened to the general.


SGCDpro members Robert Zollweg of Libbey Inc., and Lee Marvin, AdGraphics, designed the Discovery Room, with Zollweg presiding over the award ceremony at SGCDpro's Annual Banquet. Zollweg, who has presented the Discovery Awards for five years, noted that the "caliber of entries was outstanding this year, with the number of entries in tableware categories increasing dramatically along with the number of entries representing new and innovative decorating techniques."

Food Container, Glass: Chemidry of America, A frosted bottle with decorative flowers applied with an organic coating that is chemically cured rapidly at room temperature.

 

Food Container, Ceramic: Design Point Decal, Twinings Tea Container decorated with decals on translucent porcelain and sold as a promotional collectible piece.



Beverage Container, Glass: Heinrich Ceramic Decal, Inc., Dolce wine bottle decorated with a decal containing precious metal and colors for the Premier Glass Company.

Cosmetic Containers, Glass: Art Deco Div. of POCHET of America, 30 ml. TiTi New York St. Gregory fragrance bottle screen printed with three-colors and tight registration.

Architectural Glass: Decal Specialties, Mount Nittany stained glass panel featuring an organically printed indirect transfer that was printed to simulate a multicolored stained glass piece.


Architectural Ceramic: Decoritalia SpA, "Primavera" by Botticelli reproduction of original painting in Ufizzi Gallery on ceramic panel that is two meters high and one meter wide. Panel is screen printed in four-color process by Decoritalia for Cooperativa Ceramica d'Imola. Six sheets are applied by hand with junctions disguised to give the impression of a one-piece decal. Firing process took 3.5 days.


Appliances, Glass: Schott Glaswerke, Schott Glaswerke's "The Wild 3" appliance sample featuring a multi-colored glass ceramic cooking surface, safety glass oven panel and oven door. Decoration is screen printed on glass ceramic cooktop, float glass panel and door.


Hollowware, Tumblers: Libbey Inc., Le Fleur glasses with screen-printed flower decoration.


Hollowware, Mugs: Heinrich Ceramic Decal, Inc., Nostalgic full-coverage mug wrap designs printed by Heinrich decal for Land and Wise. Mugs sold in matching boxes.

Ad Specialty & Premium, Glass: Durand Glass Manufacturing, Disorrono Rondelo OTR (on-the-rocks) tumblers that are decorated with a full-wrap screen-printing process that uses 3 colors and gold.

Ad Specialty & Premium, Ceramic: The Allen Co., Executive Set 3-piece black marble mug, clip caddy and coaster/lid with a gold OCC Latex Division imprint. Satin etch ink is applied with a 22 kt. gold overlay for a two-tone gold effect.

Lighting Ware, Glass: Fenton Art Glass Co., Reverse painted lampshade on a brass base. Shade is first sandblasted on both sides before flowers are painted on the outside with glass enamels and fired. The inside scenes are then hand-painted and airbrushed, and the piece is fired again.
